Why you should be excited

Democrat is an Australian apple best known for ripening really late and then keeping well for even longer.

The story of Democrat

Those of us with simplistic images of places we’ve never visited may be surprised to know they grow apples in Tasmania. Better than that, it’s where this nice apple variety originated, apparently a chance seedling in an orchard sometime around the end of the 19th century.

Initially named Duffy’s Seedling and eventually also known as Tasma, this is a variety that scores well on three key attributes: it’s sweet, crisp and juicy. It also grows on a relatively disease-resistant tree and the fruit keeps extremely well.

With such positive characteristics, it might surprise you to know that Democrat is only grown today in Tasmania and New Zealand. And Salt Spring Island, now, too.
